‘I want to sell out stadiums like Mick & Keith’
This weekend I watched the Diane Becker doc 'Tina' on Sky (via NOW if you don't have Sky). It gives a frank account of the violence and coercive control Tina Turner suffered during her marriage, how she escaped and how subsequently, when asked what her ambition was by an agent replied 'I want to sell out stadiums like Mick and Keith'
My mouth fell open listening to the power and audacity of her self-belief in that moment and I have been thinking about those words ever since.
Of course there is only one Tina Turner and had she never sung a note again from that day her career and story would still be worthy and remarkable, the thing that I take from her is the sense of agency that she demonstrates. We all have different ambitions, different responsibilities and as such our working and earning capacities vary. What I encourage you to listen out for in other women's stories is the self-determination. That's the good stuff.
P.S. During the film she also talks about how little time she spent with her children because of prioritising her working life and the cost of that decision. Taking responsibility for our own life doesn't mean that we we avoid suffering.
