Pay attention to people 2 steps ahead of you, not 10

I have been free from drugs and alcohol for 20 years, that makes for an inspiring story but isn't that relatable if you are struggling to get a day clean. If you want to know how to get through your first year, talk to someone who just got through their first year.

In the same way success stories in business are an important motivator but we should never underestimate the advice and insight of contemporaries who are 6 months or a year ahead of us in their professional evolution.

This advice is especially true if you are joining a group or membership (ahem REALWORK) and are being bothered by our old friends self-doubt and imposter-syndrome.

Turn down the volume on the shiny people and listen to the people who are closer at hand until you feel stronger. If this rings a bell with you I'd love to know.

If you loved this article and want to learn more from experienced freelancers and founders join REALWORK, the online co-working space for women who want the accountability of an action-based co-working space with an experienced and dynamic founder in the centre.
