ip: yes you need to protect it and here’s why

Registering the visual identity (logo) of your business as a Trade Mark is a simple process, you can do it yourself and in its most basic form costs a few hundred quid. But why should you bother?

I'm not an IP lawyer but I have been through this process many times over and am telling you it's a good idea for one compelling reason:

You might want investment in your brand in the future.

Yes, it may not seem like a possibility now but the great thing about business is that all kinds of opportunities can emerge. It's all very well naming your business after your dead tortoise and not checking if there are already 10 companies with the same name if you are 100% sure you will only operate locally and will never ever want to raise your head above the parapet but if there is even a slight chance that in the future you might want to take investment into your business then your ducks need to be a row and IP is a duck that is easier to line up early on.

'Are your brand assets protected?' is on every single investor's checklist EVER. and 'yeah but no but yeah but no' doesn't cut it.
